Luddendenfoot Community Centre will close on 1 June. Unless someone takes over in the meantime the building will be handed back to the Council.
I sent an email earlier in the year in which I said that the Centre has been transformed into an economically viable concern with a sustainable income and competition for a variety of users. The fabric of the building has also been greatly improved inside and out. HOWEVER! I also explained that the job of running the Centre was in the hands of a small number of trustees and volunteers and this situation had become untenable. I therefore pointed out that unless more people volunteered to take on tasks to do with the day to day running of the building it would have to close.
A few people who already contributed offered to do more but there were no additional volunteers.
Since then the pandemic has meant that everything in relation to the building has been put on hold but that did not alter the need for more people to commit to the running of the Centre.
If anyone would like to take over the responsibility for the building that would be excellent. In the absence of such a volunteer however it is with considerable regret that I have to inform everyone that the lease will be terminated, the building returned to Calderdale Council and no further activities will take place even as and when the coronavirus crisis eases.
The current trustees have set a date of 1 June by which time, assuming no one has taken over the reins, the building will close. Even if someone does offer to step in and take over it will be without the current trustees who are all resigning. Having put so much time and effort into transforming and running the building this is disappointing but it is supposed to be a Centre for the community run by the community. Without the commitment of more than the current handful of volunteers the building cannot operate.
The coronavirus freeze at least gives time for users to consider alternatives for their respective groups. I would also ask that you consider what property you have within the building that you would want to remove before the Centre is handed back to the Council. This might be personal property or things connected with your group's usage but please only remove items which are indisputably yours! I am aware that some of you have paid a key deposit. We will address the issue of returning keys and deposits in due course.
Please forward this email to anyone who you think needs to know.
If you are interested in taking over the running of the LCA please contact me before the end of the month. Not replying will be taken as tacit acceptance of the situation.
